What is an Employee Assistance Program?

Your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is an employee benefit paid for by the district. It is designed to provide professional counseling and referrals for services that can help with difficulties that may affect the quality of your personal life or job performance. The Schenectady City School District values you and offers EAP as a resource to assist you.

Who is Eligible?

The Employee Assistance Program services are available to all district employees and eligible family members. Eligible family members include your spouse or domestic partner, and dependents up to the age of 18 or to age 21 if living at home or attending school.

Here's how it works:

When employees call EAP, an intake specialist asks for general information about the type of services requested. This specialist will then schedule an appointment, obtain a referral, or transfer the caller to the appropriate EAP staff member.

People call EAP with a wide variety of issues. These include financial or legal, communication/relationship issues, alcohol and substance use, emotional distress (anxiety, stress, fears), and self improvement/career transition or retirement.

  • All calls are confidential. The Schenectady City School District will not receive information about which employees and family members access these services.

  • Capital EAP will work with an employee's health insurance provider to ensure follow-up care if it is needed.

What should you know about EAP?

  • Free - This service is pre-paid by your employer. It is an additional benefit of your employment.

  • Confidential - The success of your EAP is based on respect for the privacy of each participant. No one, not even your employer, knows whether or not you have used EAP counseling or referral services unless you request in writing that we tell them. Your privacy is insured by Federal law and professional codes of conduct that our EAP counselors must adhere to.

  • Voluntary - Only you decide whether or not you wish to use Capital EAP.

  • Accessible - Capital EAP has many offices throughout the Capital District, New York State and in many of the major cities across the U.S. Services can be accessed by calling either 465-3813 if you are within the Capital Region or 1-800-777-6531 if you are outside the Capital area.
