Lebel, who was gathered in the school cafeteria to hold an assembly with approximately 100 of her students, was shocked when she turned around and spotted, in addition to the lieutenant governor,  Superintendent Larry Spring, Principal Diane Wilkinson, Board of Education Members John Foley, Cathy Lewis, Ann Rielly and Bernice Rivera and City Council President Ed Kosiur entering the cafeteria with media in tow.

Hochul didn't immediately announce that it was Lebel receiving the award.  But, leading up to the announcement, she shared some of the remarks that were included in the nomination.  The  students began looking at Lebel, and immediately knew that Hochul was talking about their teacher.

Lebel's husband and colleagues also joined the celebration.

Governor Cuomo's Empire State Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes educational leaders who exemplify the professional work of outstanding, progressive and innovative educators striving to attain New York standards and success of all of their students.

This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week.
